Beyond Re-Animator

West is doing time in a crumbling provincial prison after the Miskatonic University disaster, but confinement hasn't slowed his research. Working with whatever the cell provides, he zeroes in on a new variable: a plasma-like substance that leaves the body at the exact moment of death. Reintroduce it and the revived subject might actually keep their mind — a step beyond anything he managed before. Then a new prison doctor arrives, and West recognises a connection to his past. The controlled experiments get very uncontrolled very fast.

Yuzna leans harder into black comedy here than in the earlier films, and the prison setting gives the whole thing a grimy, contained energy.
