Synopsis
The Miracle of Bern (Das Wunder von Bern, 2003) is a German drama you can watch online on iFILM, directed by Sönke Wortmann. It's built around one of football's defining upsets: West Germany's 3–2 comeback against heavily favored Hungary in the 1954 World Cup final in Bern, Switzerland.
Young Matthias barely remembers his father. Richard Lubanski (Peter Lohmeyer) spent eleven years in a Soviet prisoner-of-war camp and comes home to a family that rebuilt itself without him — a wife who found her footing, a son who doesn't know him, a country that moved on. Matthias carries bags at the national team's training sessions and idolizes striker Helmut Rahn, treating him as the father figure his real father doesn't yet know how to be. Louis Klamroth is remarkable in the role; the boy's scenes earn their emotion.
Wortmann braids two kinds of long waiting — a nation's and a child's — into a film where both resolutions arrive on the same July afternoon. Stream The Miracle of Bern (2003) online on iFILM.
