Synopsis
The King of Laughter (Qui rido io, 2021) is an Italian historical drama you can watch online on iFILM. Directed by Mario Martone and anchored by a commanding performance from Toni Servillo, it follows Eduardo Scarpetta — the undisputed king of Neapolitan theatre at the turn of the twentieth century — as his empire starts to crack.
Scarpetta sells out every show, runs a company of actors, and supports multiple overlapping families under the same roof. Then he stages a parody of the poet Gabriele D'Annunzio, who promptly sues him for copyright infringement. The trial threatens not just Scarpetta's career but the financial stability of everyone around him — including his young son Eduardo De Filippo, who would go on to become one of Italy's greatest playwrights in his own right.
Martone resists the biopic-as-pageant approach entirely. What he gives you instead is a close study of a man who has built his life on making people laugh and now discovers that power has its own weight. Servillo plays both registers — the crowd-pleasing showman and the anxious patriarch — without ever letting one swallow the other. Stream The King of Laughter online on iFILM.
