Synopsis
We Believed (Noi credevamo, 2010) is an Italian historical epic you can watch online on iFILM, directed by Mario Martone and awarded the Special Jury Prize at the Venice Film Festival.
It opens in 1828 in the monarchist south of Italy. Three young friends witness the violent suppression of an uprising and join Giuseppe Mazzini's movement for a unified republican Italy. The film then follows them across decades: imprisonment, exile, armed revolt, political fractures. The three drift apart, each arriving at a different reckoning with what they gave up and what the cause actually produced. Luigi Lo Cascio, Valerio Binasco, Toni Servillo, and Luca Zingaretti lead a large cast through a meticulous reconstruction of the Risorgimento era.
Nearly three hours, and Martone uses all of it. This is not a celebration — it is an argument about idealism: what it costs, what it survives, and what it does not. Italy submitted the film for the Academy Award for Best International Feature. Watch We Believed online on iFILM.
