Synopsis
The Public Eye (1992) is a crime drama by Howard Franklin that you can watch online on iFILM. Picture 1940s New York at night, a flashbulb popping over a fresh corpse. Leon Bernstein, known on the street as "The Great Bernzini," shoots the city's crime scenes and somehow beats the cops to the body every time.
Nothing matters to Leon more than the camera. He's a cigar-chewing loner who sells shocking photos to the tabloids while dreaming of collecting them one day as a proper book of art. His routine cracks open when nightclub owner Kay asks for help and pulls him into a war between two mob families. Suddenly his lens is catching things worth killing for. Joe Pesci plays Leon, Barbara Hershey is Kay, with Stanley Tucci and Dominic Chianese in support.
The character is modeled on the real New York photographer Weegee, who chased fires and murders by flashbulb light. The film soaks in noir texture — smoke, wet asphalt, the black-and-white pulse of a big city. Pesci's turn here is quiet and underrated, trading his usual fury for the melancholy of a lonely artist. One for fans of retro noir and slow-burn crime. Stream The Public Eye (1992) online on iFILM.
