Synopsis
Cabin in the Sky (1943) is a fantasy musical you can watch online on iFILM — Vincente Minnelli's feature debut, made at MGM before his celebrated run of musicals in the following decade.
Compulsive gambler Little Joe Jackson dies in a brawl and wakes in purgatory. Heaven grants him six months back on Earth to earn his place in the sky, with an angel and Lucifer Jr. both keeping score. His devoted wife Petunia — played by Ethel Waters with a grounded warmth that carries every scene she's in — prays him through the whole ordeal. Lena Horne plays the temptress Georgia Brown, and Louis Armstrong turns up with his trumpet.
Shot with an entirely Black cast at a time when Hollywood rarely offered Black performers top billing outside of segregated productions, the film holds up as charming period entertainment and a document of what the era's talent could do when given the room.
