Synopsis
The Cat Concerto (1947) is a classic MGM animated short you can watch online on iFILM, directed by William Hanna and Joseph Barbera. Eight minutes, no dialogue — just Tom performing Liszt's Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2 for a packed concert hall, not realising Jerry has been napping inside the grand piano.
What follows is one of the most precisely timed comedy routines in animation. Every hammer strike, pratfall, and chase beat is locked to Liszt's score so tightly that the music and the slapstick become the same thing. This is the short that took home the Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film, and it still holds up as proof that the best Tom and Jerry gags work like clockwork.
