Synopsis
Dark Passage (1947) is a Hollywood noir you can watch online on iFILM, directed by Delmer Daves and starring Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall. The film opens with a sustained first-person camera perspective — forty minutes shot from inside the protagonist's point of view, an unusual technique that still works as disorientation.
Vincent Parry breaks out of San Quentin after ten years inside for a murder he didn't commit. A woman named Irene Jansen picks him up on the highway and offers shelter, no questions asked — or almost none. Bogart's face only appears on screen after a back-alley plastic surgery scene; until then you're seeing through his eyes. Bacall plays Irene as someone with her own reasons and her own risks, never explaining herself when a look will do.
The third film Bogart and Bacall made together, Dark Passage leans hard on the chemistry the audience already knew from the previous two. It's a tighter noir than it's sometimes given credit for, with a nasty turn from Agnes Moorehead as the real threat. Stream Dark Passage (1947) online on iFILM.
