Synopsis
The Wave (1981) is a short American TV film you can watch online on iFILM. It grew out of something a history teacher actually pulled off in a California classroom back in the spring of 1967.
His students asked how ordinary Germans let the Nazis take over. Instead of lecturing, the teacher (Bruce Davison) runs an experiment right there in class — strict discipline, a single salute, a slogan about strength through unity. For a few days it feels like an exciting game. Then the movement spills out past the classroom, grows its own rules and informers, and the teacher realizes he can no longer shut it down.
Alexander Grasshoff directed it from the schoolroom episode later known as the Third Wave — the same case that inspired the German feature The Wave. In just over forty minutes the film lays bare how fast a group slides into blind obedience. It leaves you plenty to argue about afterward. Stream The Wave (1981) online on iFILM.
