Synopsis
Jumong (2006) — watch online on iFILM. This South Korean historical drama from MBC, directed by Lee Joo-hwan and Kim Keun-Hong, traces the rise of a scorned prince who would go on to found the kingdom of Goguryeo. Song Il-guk plays the title role across 81 episodes.
Nobody at court takes Jumong seriously — his stepfather keeps him close for political convenience, his older brother openly despises him, and the palace guards barely bother. Then a series of forced exiles pushes him out of the comfort of court and into the kind of trouble that changes people fast. Two women anchor the story in different ways: Han Hye-jin as So Seo-no, the merchant's daughter whose political instincts prove as sharp as any soldier's, and Song Ji-hyo as Ye So-ya, the first person who believed in him.
The series aired in 2006 to viewership crossing 50% in South Korea — numbers most modern dramas never approach. As a starting point for Korean historical drama, it holds up: battle sequences that look genuinely expensive, court politics written for adults, and a long arc that earns its ending.
