Synopsis
Tazza: The High Rollers (타짜, 2006) is Choi Dong-hoon's Korean crime caper, and you can watch it online here. One bad hand of hwatu wipes out Go-ni's entire savings to a ring of underground card sharps. Instead of licking his wounds, he sets out to learn how to beat the men who cleaned him out.
His teacher is the country's slyest gambler, Mr. Pyeong, who takes Go-ni on the road and into a world where the deck is marked and losers pay with their fingers. City after city, illegal table after illegal table, the company gets more dangerous than any wager. Madam Jeong (Kim Hye-soo), who runs a web of backroom games, smells a fortune in the newcomer. Working out who is conning whom only gets harder.
Adapted from Heo Young-man's beloved manhwa, the film turned Cho Seung-woo into a star and gave Kim Hye-soo one of Korean cinema's great femme fatales. It moves with con-game glee, then snaps shut with near-Western cruelty. A treat for anyone who loved Oldboy and a good grift. Stream Tazza: The High Rollers (2006) online on iFILM.
