Synopsis
Mystery Science Theater 3000 (1989), Season 1 is the sci-fi comedy you can watch online on iFILM — thirteen episodes that kicked off the whole cult, the first run to air nationally.
The setup is gloriously dumb. Joel Robinson is stuck aboard the Satellite of Love, and two mad scientists, Dr. Forrester and Dr. Erhardt, run an experiment on him: lock the man up with the worst movies ever shot and see if his mind holds. So he builds robot pals and talks back to the screen. Across the season the crew sits through The Crawling Eye, The Robot vs. The Aztec Mummy, Robot Monster, Project Moonbase and a pile of other Z-grade junk, riffing line by line. Between films there are little sketches up on the SOL — swapped robot heads, Gypsy coughing up surprises, the Mads testing some new gadget.
You can hear the show finding its feet here. The jokes run a touch rougher than later years, the pacing is looser, and that rawness is half the charm. One for fans of bad cinema and slow, deadpan, almost cozy humor. Stream Mystery Science Theater 3000 Season 1 online on iFILM.
