Synopsis
Lawman (1971) is a hard-edged western you can watch online on iFILM. Burt Lancaster plays Jered Maddox, marshal of Bannock, who rides into the neighboring town of Sabbath to bring back seven men. A drunken night and a stray bullet left an old man dead, and Maddox intends to answer it with the law.
Sabbath belongs to cattle baron Vince Bronson, and Lee J. Cobb makes him weary rather than wicked — a man willing to pay his way out of trouble. Maddox refuses the money. He works through the town one door at a time, and every man on his list slowly realizes the marshal simply will not leave. Robert Ryan, as a local sheriff who traded his nerve for a quiet life, and a young Robert Duvall sharpen the dread until the line between justice and stubborn pride disappears.
Directed by Michael Winner, this is a bleak, deliberate entry from the genre's late, disillusioned years, where doing right costs more than the original crime. The tension builds slowly and lands on a choice, not a shootout. It suits viewers who like the moral murk of Peckinpah and Leone. Stream Lawman (1971) online on iFILM.
