Synopsis
The Infidel (2010) is a British comedy from director Josh Appignanesi, and you can watch it online on iFILM. Mahmud Nasir runs a small minicab firm in London, enjoys a drink, skips most of his prayers, and counts himself a Muslim mostly out of habit. One document from his late mother's papers turns that quiet life upside down.
Mahmud's son wants to marry, but the bride's stepfather is a hardline cleric whose blessing the wedding can't go ahead without. So Mahmud scrambles to pass as devout, and right then discovers an adoption certificate proving he was born Jewish, his real name Solly Shimshillewitz. Now he has to secretly work out who he actually is without blowing up his son's engagement.
Omid Djalili carries the whole thing, while Richard Schiff is a treat as the grumpy Jewish neighbor who agrees to coach Mahmud on "being Jewish." The film pokes open fun at religious labels without any cruelty in it; the joke is that a person is always bigger than the box they're filed under. Stream The Infidel (2010) online on iFILM.
