The Return of Swamp Thing
Why can't men be more like plants?
Synopsis
The Return of Swamp Thing (1989) is an American sci-fi horror directed by Jim Wynorski that you can watch online on iFILM. Dick Durock returns as the plant-based mutant, this time opposite Heather Locklear as Abigail, who arrives at her stepfather's Louisiana compound looking for answers about her mother's death.
Dr. Arcane, played with relish by Louis Jourdan, runs a genetics lab populated by his own failed experiments — creatures that were once human and no longer are. When Arcane decides Abigail's biology is useful to his immortality formula, Swamp Thing pulls her out of danger. What follows is a chase through the swamps with Arcane's armed crew in pursuit, and, somewhat inevitably, a romance between a woman and a very large plant.
Wynorski knew exactly what kind of film he was making: a self-aware B-movie that winks at the genre rather than taking it seriously. Compared to Wes Craven's 1982 original it leans hard into camp, and Locklear plays it with the right mix of sincerity and lightness. The tagline alone — "Why can't men be more like plants?" — tells you everything about the tone. Stream The Return of Swamp Thing (1989) online on iFILM.
