Two separate stories run in parallel. Young Nathan is desperately trying to buy his dying mother a pair of shoes for Christmas — she's a school choir director whose heart is giving out. Meanwhile, lawyer Robert Layton and his wife Kate are quietly coming apart, until Kate steps in to lead the choir and something shifts between them.
