Synopsis
The Panama Papers (2018) — watch online on iFILM this documentary from director Alex Winter following one of the most far-reaching document leaks in journalism history. In 2016, the German newspaper Süddeutsche Zeitung received 11.5 million files from an anonymous source inside the Panamanian law firm Mossack Fonseca, exposing how presidents, oligarchs, and celebrities parked their money in the shadows.
Winter reconstructs the year-long secret coordination behind the story: Bastian Obermayer and Frederik Obermaier, who first handled the data, Marina Walker Guevara and Gerard Ryle at ICIJ, and reporters from 76 countries working under strict embargo. Elijah Wood narrates. The film also makes room for Julian Assange, Edward Snowden, and the late Daphne Caruana Galizia — the Maltese journalist who pursued the Panama Papers story and was killed by a car bomb in 2017.
This is less a finance explainer than a record of what happened to the people who chased the story. Some of them didn't come out safely. Stream The Panama Papers (2018) online on iFILM.
