Operation Varsity Blues: The College Admissions Scandal
The man behind the scandal.
Synopsis
Operation Varsity Blues: The College Admissions Scandal (2021) is a Netflix documentary you can watch online on iFILM. Chris Smith directs.
In 2019 the FBI pulled the lid off a scheme that slipped the children of wealthy parents into Stanford, Yale and Georgetown by price tag rather than grades. At the middle sat Rick Singer, a consultant who charged families six figures for faked athletic profiles and ringers who sat their kids' entrance exams. Smith builds the film around the actual wiretap transcripts: the real phone calls between Singer and his clients are performed by actors, with Matthew Modine cast as Singer himself.
The result is not a talking-head doc but a reenactment that lets you hear how casually a college seat gets bought and sold. It aims past the celebrity headlines at a system that already opens most doors for money, no fraud required. Stream Operation Varsity Blues online on iFILM.
