Hale County is one of the poorest counties in the United States. Ross embedded himself here for five years, following several Black families — not through interviews or narration, but through accumulated images: morning light, a child's first steps, pickup basketball, a sudden death. Daniel Collins is trying to get a college basketball scholarship; Quincy Bryant has just become a father. The camera watches without explanation.
