Synopsis
The Night Listener (2006) is a psychological thriller you can watch online on iFILM. Director Patrick Stettner adapted Armistead Maupin's novel and put Robin Williams in the lead — playing not against type for laughs, but against type in a way that quietly unsettles everything.
Gabriel Noone hosts a late-night radio program and is in the middle of his relationship falling apart. A manuscript lands in his hands through his publisher: a fourteen-year-old boy named Pete has written about years of abuse and illness, and credits Gabriel's show with keeping him going. Pete calls Gabriel directly. The voice on the phone is warm and real, and Gabriel needs the connection as much as the boy seems to. Tony Collette plays Pete's adoptive mother, Rory Culkin plays Pete — but the longer Gabriel talks to them, the less certain he is that he's speaking to two people.
Williams plays the whole film at a low register, no charm deployed, no jokes. That restraint is the point: a man who listens for a living gets taken in by his own need to matter to someone. Stream The Night Listener (2006) online on iFILM.
