Synopsis
A Canterbury Tale (1944) is a wartime British drama you can watch online on iFILM, made by Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger. On a blacked-out night in a small Kent town, three strangers step off the same train and into a very odd mystery.
A land girl, sent to farm the fields while the men are away at war, has glue poured into her hair by an unseen attacker. She isn't the only one — the locals whisper about a phantom "glue man." Together with an American sergeant who got off at the wrong stop and a British soldier on leave, she sets out to unmask him. The whodunit barely matters, though. What the film is really about is how these outsiders settle into each other and into the old English countryside on their way to Canterbury. Eric Portman, Sheila Sim, Dennis Price and real-life GI John Sweet head the cast.
It's a strange, near-mystical picture where the detective plot dissolves into something closer to a hymn — pilgrimage, landscape, and small unexpected grace. Overlooked for years, this Archers production now ranks among their most singular work. Stream A Canterbury Tale (1944) online on iFILM.
