Synopsis
The Miracle of Morgan's Creek (1944) is a Preston Sturges screwball comedy you can watch online on iFILM. Small-town girl Trudy Kockenlocker wakes up the morning after a wild send-off party for departing soldiers — married, pregnant, and with no memory of who the groom was.
She can barely recall his name, tracking him down is hopeless, and the town gossips never miss a thing. Enter Norval Jones, a stammering, accident-prone fellow who has carried a torch for Trudy for years. To cover for her he agrees to a sham marriage under a false name — and lands in jail on fraud charges for his trouble. Eddie Bracken and Betty Hutton carry the whole avalanche of absurdity, with Sturges regular William Demarest blustering as Trudy's short-fused father.
Sturges smuggled a comedy about an unplanned pregnancy past wartime censors and pulled it off so deftly that in 2000 the American Film Institute named it one of the hundred funniest movies ever made. The pace is frantic, the lines come in bursts, and the payoff is a setpiece all its own. Stream The Miracle of Morgan's Creek (1944) online on iFILM.
