Synopsis

49th Parallel (1941) is a British wartime thriller by Michael Powell that you can watch online on iFILM. After the Royal Canadian Air Force sinks their U-boat in Hudson Bay, six stranded German sailors find themselves deep inside enemy territory.

Led by the icy Lieutenant Hirth, they make a desperate run south toward the United States — still neutral, still open. The route drags them across the full width of Canada, and every stop becomes a clash of values: a French-Canadian trapper named Johnnie, a peaceful Hutterite settlement, a bookish camper up in the Rockies. Laurence Olivier, Leslie Howard, Raymond Massey and Anton Walbrook each take one of those encounters.

Made as morale-boosting propaganda, the film outgrew its brief. Emeric Pressburger took home the Oscar for the original story, and Powell shot the whole thing on location, from prairie to mountain. What lingers isn't the chase but the argument underneath it — what a free country actually owes its people. Stream 49th Parallel (1941) online on iFILM.
