Synopsis
A Whole Life (Ein ganzes Leben, 2023) is an Austrian-German drama you can watch online on iFILM, adapted from Robert Seethaler's beloved novel. It follows one man across nearly the entire twentieth century in a single Alpine valley.
Orphaned young, Andreas is handed to a hard-fisted farmer high in the mountains. His childhood is labour, beatings and little warmth, yet he grows into a quiet, stubborn man rooted to this land. He takes dangerous work building one of the first mountain railways — the one that drags electricity, light and noise into the valley. Then he meets Marie, and for the first time he is happy. It does not last.
Director Hans Steinbichler treats Seethaler's bestseller gently: few words, long landscapes, time sliding through war, grief and old age. Shot in South Tyrol, the peaks become a character in their own right. This is slow, contemplative cinema for viewers willing to live a whole lifetime beside a man rather than chase plot twists.
