Synopsis
The Witness for the Prosecution (2016) is a two-part BBC drama from Agatha Christie that you can watch online on iFILM. In the cold London of the early 1920s, wealthy widow Emily French is found beaten to death in her own drawing room.
Suspicion falls on Leonard Vole (Billy Howle), a charming, penniless war veteran who had the access, the motive and a freshly rewritten will in his favour. His defence rests with John Mayhew (Toby Jones), a solicitor worn thin by asthma and debt — and the figure this version pushes to the centre of the story. Everything hinges on the testimony of Leonard's wife Romaine (Andrea Riseborough), whose chilly composure leaves you guessing whether she will save him or sink him until the final scene.
Screenwriter Sarah Phelps takes Christie's twist and bends it somewhere darker than the page ever went — this is a claustrophobic noir about guilt and calculation, not a cosy period whodunit. Kim Cattrall as the dead woman and director Julian Jarrold's damp, sickly London pile on the dread. Stream The Witness for the Prosecution online on iFILM.
