Nuts

The fight is over whether she's sane enough to face a jury at all. Her own family and the state's psychiatrists would rather see her ruled incompetent and quietly committed. Court-appointed lawyer Aaron Levinsky (Richard Dreyfuss) takes the case half-reluctantly, then starts pulling at the thread of where all that rage comes from — and the respectable family portrait begins to crack.

Martin Ritt shoots it almost like a chamber piece: hearings, cross-examinations, faces in close-up, the cast left to carry every scene. Streisand, who also produced, plays it raw, backed by Karl Malden, Maureen Stapleton, Eli Wallach and a surprisingly straight Leslie Nielsen.
