About

Synopsis

Hud (1963) is an American drama directed by Martin Ritt, starring Paul Newman in the title role — watch it online on iFILM. The film took three Oscars: Patricia Neal for Best Actress, Melvyn Douglas for Best Supporting Actor, and James Wong Howe for his stark black-and-white cinematography.

Hud Bannon runs on one principle: what he wants, he takes. His father Homer (Douglas) runs the same Texas ranch on the opposite principle — that how you do a thing matters as much as whether you do it. Nephew Lon watches Hud and mistakes that confidence for something worth learning. The housekeeper Alma (Neal) is not fooled for a second. No gunfight settles anything here. The damage is done at the kitchen table, in quiet decisions, and in what Lon eventually understands too late.

Newman plays the role with full magnetism and zero apology, which is exactly why the film still lands. Hud is the kind of character audiences root for against their better judgment. Stream Hud (1963) online on iFILM.
