Synopsis

The Thick of It (2005), Season 1 is the BBC political satire you can watch online on iFILM — just three episodes, shot on jittery handheld cameras and largely improvised. Hugh Abbot has barely taken the chair as Minister for Social Affairs before the panic starts.

Each episode catches government mid-flail. His "Snooper Squad" gets vetoed, leaving forty minutes to invent a replacement policy on the spot. A focus group then drags him between two bills, and an empty London flat threatens to sink a Housing Bill while a rival hoovers up the credit. Looming over all of it is Malcolm Tucker, Number 10's foul-mouthed enforcer, played by Peter Capaldi in the role that made the show notorious.

Armando Iannucci films backroom politics like a cringe office sitcom — no score, no heroes, just terrified civil servants. If dry, unsoftened British comedy is your thing, start here. Stream The Thick of It Season 1 online on iFILM.
