Synopsis
The Thirteenth Tale (2013) is a British TV film you can watch online on iFILM — James Kent's adaptation of Diane Setterfield's debut novel, which spent 46 weeks on The New York Times bestseller list after its 2006 publication.
Margaret Lea (Olivia Colman) runs her days between her father's antiquarian bookshop and the novels of the nineteenth century. A letter from Vida Winter (Vanessa Redgrave) — England's most famous living novelist, whose personal history is one long invented story — changes that. Winter wants a biographer who will actually listen. Margaret travels to a remote northern estate and hears a childhood account of twins, fire, and a household that kept its worst memories locked away for decades.
The film belongs to Redgrave and Colman. Alexandra Roach plays the younger Vida; Sophie Turner appears in early flashback scenes. The gothic tone is restrained — atmosphere built slowly, not horror signalled loudly — which is exactly what the story needs. Stream The Thirteenth Tale (2013) online on iFILM.
