Synopsis
Not Another Happy Ending (2013) is a Scottish romantic comedy you can watch online on iFILM. Novelist Jane Lockhart writes beautifully — but only while she's miserable. Her debut became a hit, her life finally clicked into place, and the words promptly dried up.
Here's the catch: her publisher Tom is staying afloat on that one book alone. No second novel and his small Glasgow press goes under. So he does something faintly monstrous — he quietly chips away at her newfound happiness to coax the writer's block out of her. The worse he makes her feel, the clearer it becomes that he has fallen for her himself. Karen Gillan plays the kind of heroine who needs a broken heart to finish a chapter, and the city behind her looks cozy, rain-slicked and autumnal.
Director John McKay builds an old-fashioned rom-com with a tidy engine: the book against the feelings, the scheme against the soft spot. It doesn't reach for depth, but it's charming, and a couple of scenes at the typewriter genuinely land. A fine pick for an undemanding, warm-blanket kind of evening.
