Synopsis
Blue Jean (2023) is a British drama you can watch online on iFILM, set in an England where being yourself could end your career. Jean teaches PE at a secondary school and keeps her sexuality hidden. It's 1988, Thatcher's Section 28 has just passed, banning the so-called promotion of homosexuality, and one rumour could cost her the job.
On weekdays she's the reliable teacher by the gym lockers. On weekends she's someone else, slipping into a Newcastle lesbian bar with her partner Viv, somewhere she can finally breathe. That careful split cracks open when a new pupil turns up in her class — a girl Jean recognises from the same bar. The teenager needs an ally; Jean is too frightened to be one. Rosie McEwen carries the shame almost wordlessly, in glances and tight shoulders.
Georgia Oakley's debut took the audience award in Venice's Critics' Week. Shot in the cold palette of the late eighties, it's a film about the price of staying quiet. If you want restrained, character-led cinema over big drama, this lands. Stream Blue Jean (2023) online on iFILM.
