Synopsis
Prick Up Your Ears (1987) is Stephen Frears' biographical drama you can watch online on iFILM. Gary Oldman plays the sharp, irreverent playwright Joe Orton.
London in the 1960s. The young, magnetic Orton meets Kenneth Halliwell at drama school — older, quieter, convinced of his own talent. They become lovers and collaborators, but fame lands on only one of them. Orton's farces light up the West End while Halliwell stays in the shadows, and his envy curdles into something darker. Alfred Molina is Halliwell; Vanessa Redgrave plays literary agent Peggy Ramsay, who pieces the whole story together.
Alan Bennett wrote the screenplay from John Lahr's biography, and Frears frames it like an inquest into what pushed two men toward a grim end. It's an early showcase for Oldman — jittery, charming, never sentimental. If you go for British dramas about artists who unravel, this one earns its place.
