Synopsis
A Woman's Face (1941) is a psychological thriller directed by George Cukor — watch online on iFILM. Joan Crawford plays Anna Holm, a blackmailer who has removed every mirror from her home, certain that the scar on her face settled what the world owes her.
A plastic surgeon played by Melvyn Douglas offers Anna the surgery and, with it, the possibility of looking like everyone else. Conrad Veidt plays a calculating aristocrat who sees a use for the new version of her. The film is based on Francis de Croisset's play "Il était une fois," previously filmed in Sweden in 1938, and the premise is about permanence: whether changing a face changes anything else at all.
Cukor stripped Crawford of every softening choice — no flattering angles, no warmth in the lighting — and what is left is the performance. Hard, specific, unsentimental. It is among the least glamorous roles Crawford ever took, and among her most controlled. Stream A Woman's Face (1941) online on iFILM.
