Victim

Victim (1961) is a British crime thriller directed by Basil Dearden you can watch online on iFILM. Melville Farr, a successful London barrister on the verge of taking silk, starts digging on his own after an acquaintance is arrested and then found hanged in his cell the next morning.

Farr is played by Dirk Bogarde, and the part took real nerve to accept. The trail leads to a ring of extortionists preying on gay men: at the time, sex between men was a crime in Britain, and the fear of exposure made the victims perfect targets for blackmail. Farr is vulnerable himself. To bring the gang down he has to gamble his career, his marriage and the reputation he has spent a lifetime building.

It was the first English-language film to say the word "homosexual" out loud, and it fed directly into the repeal of a Victorian law a few years later. Underneath a tight detective plot, Dearden made a bold statement about hypocrisy and the cost of silence. Restrained, powerful filmmaking, best watched with its era in mind.
