Synopsis
Camille (1936) is George Cukor's romantic drama you can watch online on iFILM. Greta Garbo stars as Marguerite Gautier, a Parisian courtesan adored by everyone with money — and for whom real love has always been a luxury she couldn't afford.
Marguerite lives by calculation: wealthy admirers, fine gowns, white camellias in her hair. Then comes Armand Duval (Robert Taylor), a young man with no fortune but a sincerity she'd long stopped expecting. She's ready to walk away from her old world for him. Until Armand's father pays her a quiet visit with a request that will wreck them both. Garbo plays it in half-tones — a consumptive cough, pain tucked behind a smile, a farewell where her words and her heart pull in opposite directions.
The story comes from the Alexandre Dumas fils novel that also gave Verdi his Traviata. Cukor, that great director of women's pictures, drew from Garbo the finest dramatic turn of her career; it brought her an Oscar nomination and the New York Film Critics prize. This is black-and-white classic Hollywood that still lands harder than most modern tearjerkers. Stream Camille (1936) online on iFILM.
