Synopsis
The Hunchback of Notre Dame (Notre-Dame de Paris, 1956) is a Victor Hugo adaptation you can watch online on iFILM. Paris, 1482, a festival square, and a gypsy dancer named Esmeralda sets three very different men ablaze. One of them lives hidden among the cathedral bells.
Quasimodo, the deaf, misshapen bell-ringer raised by the archdeacon Frollo, is the one in whom real tenderness survives. Frollo himself is eaten alive by a forbidden obsession and, out of jealousy, drives the girl toward the gallows. Esmeralda stays loyal to the dashing captain Phoebus, who has no use for her. Gina Lollobrigida plays the dancer like an open flame; Anthony Quinn turns Quasimodo into a tragic giant using only his body and his eyes.
Director Jean Delannoy mounted this as a lavish French-Italian production in colour, with the real costumes and crowds of 1950s big-screen filmmaking. It's the version of Hugo where gothic gloom matters more than fairy tale. If you love old classics and large performances, take it. Stream The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1956) online on iFILM.
