Synopsis
In the Name of the Italian People (In nome del popolo italiano, 1971) is Dino Risi's biting comedy-drama, and you can watch online on iFILM as two giants of Italian cinema go head to head. A stubborn magistrate digs into a young woman's death and keeps hitting the same name: a powerful industrialist who assumes the law doesn't apply to him.
Ugo Tognazzi plays the sour, dogged judge Bonifazi, who turns the case into something close to a personal crusade. Vittorio Gassman is Santenocito, the slick tycoon used to making paperwork and witnesses disappear. Between them sit blackmail, borrowed beds and dirty deals, and the question Bonifazi will risk his whole career to answer — can a rich man in this country actually be put away.
This is commedia all'italiana at its most acidic: funny right up to the point where it isn't, with an ending that lands like a slap. It's for anyone who loves sharp seventies political cinema and two great actors refusing to give each other an inch. Stream In the Name of the Italian People online on iFILM.
