Synopsis
Good (2008) is Vicente Amorim's historical drama, and you can watch online on iFILM. Germany, the 1930s. Literature professor John Halder, played by Viggo Mortensen, thinks of himself as a decent man — and one small step at a time becomes a cog in the Nazi machine.
Halder's home is chaos: a frayed wife, two demanding children, and a mother slipping into dementia. His novel about the right to a merciful death suddenly appeals to party ideologues, who recognize handy propaganda when they read it. Flattering attention follows, then a promotion, an SS uniform, doors opening on their own. Halder reasons his way past every doubt and keeps calling himself good, even as the regime grinds down the people he loves — including his closest friend, the Jewish psychiatrist Maurice (Jason Isaacs).
Adapted from C. P. Taylor's stage play, the film is gripping precisely because it shows no villain. Mortensen plays a mild, thoughtful, ordinary man, which makes his quiet complicity scarier than any rage. Mark Strong and Jodie Whittaker round out the cast. It's a slow, heavy watch for anyone willing to sit with the cost of a convenient compromise. Stream Good (2008) online on iFILM.
