Synopsis

The Net (그물, 2016) is a political drama from South Korean auteur Kim Ki-duk — watch it online on iFILM. A North Korean fisherman named Nam Chul-woo has a special permit to work the border river. One day his motor snags a net and dies, and the current carries him to the southern bank. Ryoo Seung-bum plays the fisherman.

South Korean intelligence picks him up immediately. Some officers want a confession of espionage. Others want a model defector for the cameras. Nam wants neither — he has a wife and daughter waiting and has never given politics a second thought. The longer the interrogation runs, the clearer it becomes that his innocence is an inconvenience to everyone involved.

Kim Ki-duk builds the film as a mirror: both Koreas look just as cynical, just as indifferent to one individual life. It is a cold, unsentimental film about division — and probably the better for it. Stream The Net (2016) online on iFILM.
