The Doctor

The Doctor (1991) is an American drama to watch online on iFILM. William Hurt plays surgeon Jack McKee — confident, high-earning, and largely indifferent to patients as people. That changes when he is diagnosed with throat cancer.

Now McKee is the one filling out forms in a waiting room, depending on colleagues he has never thought about as human beings, and sitting with a diagnosis that may or may not be survivable. Director Randa Haines drew from the memoir of real physician Edward Rosenbaum, and that grounding shows in how the film avoids easy targets: there is no corrupt hospital or villainous doctor — only a system that routinely strips patients of dignity, and a man who never noticed until it happened to him. Christine Lahti, Elizabeth Perkins, and Mandy Patinkin round out the cast.
