Synopsis
Riki-Oh: The Story of Ricky (力王, 1991) is a Hong Kong cult action film you can watch online on iFILM — one of the most gleefully excessive martial arts movies ever made. Directed by Lam Nai-Kai and adapted from a manga, it's set in 2001, when all prisons have been handed over to private corporations and the warden answers to no one.
Ricky lands inside after killing the crime boss responsible for his girlfriend's death. The prison runs on gang politics and guard brutality. That's the wrong place to put someone with Ricky's abilities: he can punch through a man's chest, sew his own wounds shut with his tendons, and walk off injuries that would kill anyone else. The gangs figure this out fairly quickly.
This is peak Category III Hong Kong cinema — critics hated it, and it became a cult object precisely for the reasons they listed. The gore effects are practical, absurd, and delivered completely straight-faced, which is exactly what makes the whole thing work. Stream Riki-Oh: The Story of Ricky online on iFILM if you know what you're signing up for.
