Synopsis
Tous les matins du monde — All the Mornings of the World (1991) — is a French historical drama you can watch online on iFILM. Director Alain Corneau adapted Pascal Quignard's novel, casting Gérard Depardieu and his son Guillaume as the same character: court composer Marin Marais at two points in his life.
Seventeenth-century France. The reclusive gambist Monsieur de Sainte-Colombe (Jean-Pierre Marielle) has sealed himself away after his wife's death, playing for no one except her ghost, which still visits. A young Marais talks his way into lessons, falls for the master's daughter, and eventually faces a choice between devotion to the instrument and the glittering life at Versailles.
The film claimed seven César Awards, among them Best Film and Best Director. Jordi Savall recorded the score on viola da gamba, and his playing is now inseparable from the film itself — mournful, exacting, and entirely without consolation. Stream All the Mornings of the World online on iFILM.
