Synopsis
Guilty by Suspicion (1991) is an American political drama you can watch online on iFILM. Writer-director Irvin Winkler assembled a cast that includes Robert De Niro, Annette Bening, Chris Cooper and — in a small but pointed cameo — Martin Scorsese. The tagline says it all: "All it took was a whisper."
Hollywood, 1951. Director David Merrill comes home from two years shooting in Paris to find an industry under siege. The House Un-American Activities Committee is calling witnesses and demanding names; studios are pulling contracts; old friends are informing on each other to save themselves. Merrill attended a handful of leftist meetings years ago, never joined anything, never believed in anything the committee is hunting. It doesn't matter. A whisper is enough to land him on the blacklist, and the only way off it is to betray someone else.
De Niro plays the whole weight of the film through restraint — very few outbursts, a lot of silences that say more. Winkler keeps the politics concrete rather than speechifying, which makes the machinery of coercion genuinely uncomfortable to watch. Stream Guilty by Suspicion (1991) on iFILM.
