The Very Loud Ending of LCD Soundsystem
Synopsis
"Shut Up and Play the Hits" (2012) is a concert documentary you can watch online on iFILM, built around the final night of Brooklyn's LCD Soundsystem at Madison Square Garden.
On April 2, 2011, the electronic band — fronted by James Murphy, with Nancy Whang and Pat Mahoney — played three hours for 18,000 people and announced their breakup. Directors Dylan Southern and Will Lovelace weave the live footage together with Murphy's quieter 48 hours: a morning interview with critic Chuck Klosterman, a walk with his dog, the long backstage silences before a last show that feels permanent. Arcade Fire's Butler brothers and Donald Glover were somewhere in that crowd. LCD Soundsystem eventually reunited, but this film captures the version of that farewell when nobody knew that yet — and that weight is everything. Stream "Shut Up and Play the Hits" (2012) online on iFILM.
