7 Boxes

7 Boxes (7 cajas, 2012) is a Paraguayan thriller you can watch online on iFILM. It is a sweltering Friday night, forty degrees, in the maze of Asunción's Mercado 4. Víctor, a seventeen-year-old wheelbarrow porter, dreams of a phone with a camera. A stranger offers him a hundred dollars for something simple: haul seven boxes across the market and never look inside.

The easy money curdles fast. Víctor is not the only one chasing the cargo — a rival porter and some very dangerous men want whatever those boxes hold. The film barely leaves the market: narrow stalls, hanging meat, tangled cables, a churning crowd, the camera sprinting after the wheelbarrow through a living, sweating bazaar. Directors Tana Schémbori and Juan Carlos Maneglia essentially stage one night-long chase where every turn between the stalls could be the last.

This was the first Paraguayan film to break out on the international festival circuit, and a rare window into a country whose cinema almost never reaches us. The cutting is quick, the non-professional cast feels real, and the setting is so specific it leaves most Hollywood chases looking generic.
