The Chemistry of Death (Season 1)

The Chemistry of Death (2023) is a British-German crime series you can watch online on iFILM. Adapted from Simon Beckett's novels about forensic anthropologist Dr David Hunter, it stars Harry Treadaway, familiar from Penny Dreadful.

Reeling from a devastating personal loss, Hunter walks away from his job as a police consultant in London and settles into a quiet Norfolk village as an ordinary country GP. The plan is to leave the past buried. Then a mutilated body surfaces in the woods, the local force comes asking for his expertise, and when a second woman vanishes the peaceful village curdles into a web of suspicion where any neighbour might be the killer. Jefferson Hall, Jeanne Goursaud and Lucian Msamati round out the cast.

Director Richard Clark builds tension from evidence rather than chases: the show lingers on how decomposition and insect activity pin down the time and manner of death. The first season covers two of the books, three episodes apiece, each a self-contained case. One for fans of bleak European procedurals in the vein of Broadchurch.
