Synopsis
Diego Maradona (2019) is a documentary you can watch online on iFILM, assembled by Asif Kapadia — the director behind Senna and Amy — from more than 500 hours of footage never publicly seen before. Runtime: 130 minutes.
Kapadia narrows his focus to Maradona's years at SSC Napoli, 1984 to 1991. In that window Diego led a historically underdog southern Italian club to two Serie A titles, then captained Argentina to the 1986 World Cup. Naples treated him less like a footballer and more like a civic deity — murals, shrines, babies named Diego. At the same time the film documents the other side: cocaine, alleged ties to the Camorra, a paternity scandal he denied for years.
The structure Kapadia uses — Maradona the public god versus Diego the private man — is the same template he applied to Senna and Winehouse, and it works just as well here. He doesn't editorialize much; the archive does the work. What stays with you is how the adoration and the destruction fed each other. Stream Diego Maradona (2019) online on iFILM.
