Synopsis

Witchfinder General (1968) — watch online on iFILM, a British historical horror directed by Michael Reeves and starring Vincent Price. The AIP-funded production remains one of the decade's bleakest films, and one of Price's most controlled performances.

England, 1645: the Civil War has left the countryside lawless, and opportunist Matthew Hopkins rides from village to village offering witch-finding services — trials that end in hanging or drowning, fees paid up front. When young cavalry officer Richard Marshall returns home, he finds Hopkins has already come for his fiancée's father. Marshall sets out to stop him, but revenge in a country this broken has its own costs.

Reeves stripped Price of his familiar theatrical menace and cast him as something quieter and more unsettling — a bureaucrat of cruelty. The director died at twenty-five, just months after the film's release, leaving this as his defining work. The film's matter-of-fact violence still lands harder than most horror made decades later.
