Hope

Hope (Håp, 2019) is a Norwegian drama you can watch online on iFILM, written and directed by Maria Sødahl from her own diagnosis. Days before Christmas, Anja learns she has a brain tumour and only months to live.

She and Tomas have been together more than twenty years. Somewhere in the routine of kids, work and shared chores, they drifted into two people who barely talk. The illness forces them back into the same room — arguing, negotiating, holding on, working out what their family was actually built on.

Andrea Bræin Hovig and Stellan Skarsgård carry it in a quiet, near-documentary register, with none of the easy sentiment the premise invites. Every ordinary scene — a doctor's office, a Christmas tree, a houseful of children — lands with uncomfortable precision. Norway submitted it for the Academy Awards.
