Secret Sunshine (밀양, 2007) is a South Korean drama directed by Lee Chang-dong — watch it online on iFILM. Widowed Shin-ae packs up her young son and moves to Miryang, the small town where her late husband grew up. It's an act of grief dressed up as a fresh start. Jeon Do-yeon plays Shin-ae with such raw precision that Cannes handed her the Best Actress prize that year; Song Kang-ho is quietly devastating as the local mechanic who loves her with no expectation of anything in return.
The early scenes are almost deceptively ordinary — settling in, making acquaintances, going through the motions. Then a second catastrophe hits. In the aftermath, Shin-ae finds something like footing in Christianity. But when she goes to the prison to forgive the man responsible, he tells her God has already forgiven him. Someone got there first. That single moment is where Lee Chang-dong plants the knife: not in trauma or grief, but in the quiet fury of a woman denied ownership of her own forgiveness. The film moves slowly and without mercy, and that is exactly the point. Stream Secret Sunshine (2007) online on iFILM.
